The post THINGS TO DO IN THE FALL IN AUSTIN (Part Two) appeared first on Juniper Springs A Concierge Community Blog.
]]>Earlier this month we shared a few of our favorite things to do in the fall in Austin. Today, we’re continuing our list and encouraging you to get out and about in Austin to support our local community.
Prepare for Pumpkin Season!
Yes, it’s that time of the year when Pumpkins start popping up on the doorsteps at Juniper Springs apartments in Austin, and throughout our festive city. Make your plans now to head on over to Sweet Berry Farm (in Maple Falls) then put Georgetown’s Sweet Eats and Springs Ranch on your list as well. Sip on some cider, enjoy the homemade treats and get a head-start on your holiday shopping list, too!
Ride into the Spectacular Colors of Fall
Soon, the Texas Hill Country will be overflowing with the colors of the fall season. And as soon as those temperatures cool off, it’s the perfect spot to head into the hills on horseback. Here are two of the best guided trail ride companies that we recommend.
Texas Trail Rides: For a traditional ride throughout the ranch with more adventurous options, Texas Trail Rides welcomes the novice to the most advanced. Looking for something different to do for that next birthday or bachelor party? Check out what they call the “ultimate Texas experience” that includes skeet shooting, ax throwing and trick roping, too!
Maverick Horseback Riding: Just one click into their website sets the tone with a quote from Winston S. Churchill: “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” They continue to describe their approach to sharing their horses with humans. “Guests who seek out Maverick’s horsemanship experience love that we offer low-key, relaxing trail rides AND engaging, challenging and highly rewarding horsemanship experiences."
Gather the family around a cozy campfire and enjoy the beauty of nature with an overnight camping trip.
Plan a Fall Stay-cation
Weekends are made for wanderers and Auditorium Shores is a super spot to get away for a Stay-cation in Austin. What to pack? Take it all! This dog-friendly park is well-planned with volleyball and basketball courts and fields to toss the ball for Fido or just a friendly game on the turf. And there’s plenty of water sport opportunities, so take the kayak, canoe, bring your boat and don’t forget the fishing gear.
Get Wet, and Wild!
With temperatures still in the 90s, having fun on the water is always on our “things to do with our family’ in Austin. Krause Springs is one of the best spots to go swimming near Austin as the natural springs keep the pools full year-round regardless of drought. You never have to worry about water levels like many other Austin swimming holes. The property is a sight to be seen with 32 springs, camping grounds, and even a butterfly garden.
Get Ready For Halloween
Forget the stress and step out to see the enormous selection of costume shops in Austin through this list below. If you would rather do something less traditional, keep reading – we have more ideas that follow this list.

From plums to peaches to all the prunes in season, preserving those seasonal favorites is a classic way to spend a fall day. It’s also a great way to get kids excited about math, as measuring the goods comes with tasty rewards!
To get you started, we found a super simple website that lays out the basics of canning from the folks at SeriousEats.com.
Some of the best recipes can be found at BallMasonJars.com. Some of our favorites that are a little out of the ordinary, yet ideal for fall feasts include:
Habanero Apricot Jam
Carrot Cake Jam
Spiced Tomato Jam
And this ‘must-make’ seasonal favorite: Apple Butter
Attend the Pecan Street Festival
On September 14th and 15th, this Festival is one of the largest, and longest-running, arts/crafts and music festivals in the nation, presented by The Pecan Street Association, a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization. If you have never attended this ultra-popular event, this year is the year to do so. With over 50 bands, arts and crafts, kids’ games and oh-so-much more, you may want to go both days. And it’s a huge fundraiser that supports a variety of projects on 6th Street and the downtown area. Among those who benefit are artists, youth programs and homeless initiatives.
Sip on the Season’s Best Brews
While the adults enjoy a seasonal brew, there are usually family-friendly spaces where kids can join in on the fun. Enjoy the outdoor areas at local breweries where everyone can relax together.

1701 East 6th Street
Austin Beer Works

Want to know where and how to pick out the perfect pumpkin? Want to try out some new recipes for canning this year? Read on, then check our Blog later this month for ideas on creating the perfect costumes and where to show them off at the top spot to celebrate Halloween in Austin, this year.
How To Pick Out A Perfect Pumpkin
So, where do you start? It depends on the purpose. If you have plans to host a pumpkin carving party, focus on the large, uniform shapes; they are best for carving creative creatures. If you are seeking a pumpkin for the perfect pumpkin pie, here’s the rule: the smaller and heavier, the better.
While picking out pumpkins, be sure to get a few squashes to make one of the richest and most delicious recipes for Squash Soup from HowSweetEats.com.
To ensure your pumpkin lasts as long as it can, exchange the real candles of yesteryear with battery-operated candles.
And here’s an excellent tip to keep your artistry looking healthy well into the fall season: wipe the fruit off with bleach and water.
Where to Pick Out A Pumpkin
Last year we provided you with a list of pumpkin patches and local farms within a short drive from our apartments to rent in Austin, Texas. All of those listed below are still our favorite spots.

- Cost savings: Canning food is cheaper than freezing food.
- Environmental impact: Canning helps save the environment.
- Convenience: Canned foods are readily available.
- Versatility: Canning allows you to enjoy homemade goodness throughout the year.

To end our blog, here's an appropriate rhyme created by Charles G. Eastman. He was the first Native American to be certified in Western Medicine and one of the most prolific authors and speakers on Sioux ethnohistory and American Indian affairs in the early 20th century.
The mellow moon, the changing leaves,
The earlier setting sun,
Proclaim at last, my merry boys,
The harvest time begun. –Charles G. Eastman (1816–1860)

As we continue to enjoy our spectacular fall weather from our apartment community in North Austin, we like to eat outdoors as often as possible. To get you out and about to do the same, we have asked our staff at Juniper Springs apartments for rent in Austin for their top picks for where to do to eat outdoors in Austin. We must admit, the list was overwhelming. So, we took a vote and paired it down to the following options that we are sure you will enjoy.
Cheers!
Modeled after their family’s ranch, the family at Contigo has been entertaining Austin locals and visitors alike for over 30 years. What we like best about Contigo is its consistent fresh, local, quality food and of course, their famous margaritas!
With one of the largest outdoor dining patios in town, you can feel comfortable within its spacious setting. In the evening, the Tivoli lights add to the atmosphere that may soon be a ‘must-do’ for you throughout the fall season.
Our favorites? Try the Contigo Burger, Fried Catfish Sandwich, or Backyard Burger. You can see the full menu right here.
And their website says it best: Out goal is to off a place to relax, commune, and enjoy great food. We hope you will join us
Thanks to their expansive backyard, Lenoir continues to offer some of the finest food in Austin in their popular Wine Garden. We just love sitting under their 500-year-old live oak trees while we enjoy some of their award-winning food and beverages.
When owners Todd and Jessica first opened Lenoir in 2012, they had a passion for building a strong culinary community in Austin. Fast forward to today where they made good on that promise and now offer some of the more creative dishes to enjoy – sourced almost exclusively from Texas’s community of farmers and food artisans.
What do we order? It completely depends on the week as the menu is switched up to keep us coming back. Which we do! Before you go, make a reservation, and check out the weekly menu right here.
For some of the freshest fish and oysters in Austin, Perla’s is the place to be. Owners Larry and Tom ensure that the food you enjoy is fresh from the ocean (on both coasts) where they fly their favorites in for you on a DAILY basis! Promising “simple, clean, and simply delicious,” Perla’s also offer their suggestions for pairing the perfect meal with the perfect blend of wines from their extensive wine list.
Known throughout the City for one of the prettiest patios in the South, they also offer their open-air dining area to complement their offerings for safe and sensational dining experiences.
Be it brunch, lunch, or dinner, our eyes are always on the “Perla’s Plates” that offer a delicious combination of fresh seafood options – be it Sea Bass, Lobster, Scallops from Maine, or many of their options, it’s all good!
One more thing, be sure to check out their huge Saltwater Fish Tank!
Possibly the best spot for outdoor dining in Austin, Jacoby consistently received top ratings for their food, friendly service, and fun all the way around wrapped within their Ranch-to-Table dining experience. We always ask for a table outside along the river, be sure to do the same.
There is some interesting history to this establishment as well that is noted on their website: The Jacoby Family founded Jacoby Feed and Seed in Melvin in January of 1981. Since, they have grown Jacoby Feed and Seed in Melvin to a multi-faceted, vertically integrated family business that includes a farm and ranching operation, cafe, and rail center.
As for our suggestions, go to the “Jacoby Brand Beef” selections on the menu. Born and raised in Central, Texas, by the Jacoby family, the cattle have been raised with only the finest nutrition that includes pasture grass, hay, and a special Jacoby Feed and Seed. You can read more about their family ranch operation and their full menu on their website.

]]>The post TRAVELING FOR THE HOLIDAYS? CHECK OUT THESE TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE TRAVEL EASIER DURING THE UPCOMING HOLIDAY SEASON. appeared first on Juniper Springs A Concierge Community Blog.
]]>
With the fall season right around the corner, smart travelers are already looking for good deals and great tips on how to enjoy their holiday travel this year. Be it Thanksgiving, Christmas, or events in-between, traveling can be a challenge to say in the least.
To help you stay ahead of the (stress) curve, we decided to use our blogs this month on some tips that we have found online that will hopefully make your travels to and from our apartment community in Austin, Texas, this Thanksgiving (and other holidays) a lot more enjoyable this year.
We’ll send along our thanks to the Travel Channel who has enlightened us with the following tips.
Safe travels!
Plan Ahead
It's never too early to start your holiday travel planning. In the early fall, you can take advantage of lower rates and seats aplenty. To jump on a bargain, sign up for sale notifications from your preferred airlines or Amtrak and follow your favorites on Twitter and Facebook where special sale notifications may pop up before they are available to the general public.
Travel Light
As more airlines start charging for checked bags, it's a good idea to pack light and carry on your bag. But keep in mind that your fellow travelers will all have the same idea and overhead space may be tight onboard. To lighten your traveling load, consider shipping some of your belongings to your final destination ahead of time, especially presents and bulky items like diapers or extra clothes that you won't need for the journey.
Choose the Best Days
The day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year, closely followed by the Sunday after the big day when travelers tear themselves away from the leftovers and football to make the journey home. Christmas has a similar pattern.
Avoid these days by flying out on Monday or Tuesday if the holiday schedule makes sense. When you're ready to head home, take flight on Friday when the masses have moved on from the airports to the shopping centers to score the best holiday deals. The crowds pick up again on Saturday, reaching a critical peak on Sunday, before leveling out on Monday.
High-Tech Troubleshooting
It's commonsense to arrive at the airport early — you'll need the time for parking, security and to wait your turn for that necessary cup of coffee. But you can avoid some airport hassles by taking advantage of useful applications that can be used on your smart phone. iPhone users can get the skinny on the airport, including maps showing the gates and restaurant information, using the GateGuru app. Airlines including Southwest, Delta and American Airlines all have mobile websites where passengers can check in, confirm seats and keep track of their flight status.
Holiday Road
While you certainly save money and avoid some headaches traveling by land, navigating the highways presents its own set of holiday challenges during the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Traffic can choke heavily traveled routes adding hours to generally speedy trips. Follow the same best practices for road travel, including avoiding the highways on the Wednesday before turkey day and the following Sunday.
Plan your route ahead of time and travel with a GPS system, smart phone or old-school maps to offer alternatives if you need a Plan B. And to avoid unnecessary delays, bring along an E-ZPass or change for the tolls, as well as plenty of snacks, and be sure to fill up on gas before you hit the road.
Unplug. Unwind. Have fun.
Although traveling during the holidays has its challenges, when all is said and done it gives us all a chance to really unplug, unwind, and spend good times with family and friends.
On behalf of the entire team at Juniper Springs, we wish you the best of success in planning your holiday travels. If you happen to decide to stay at home, we’ll look forward to sharing the seasons with you!
