A 3-day weekend is always a great time to get outdoors and enjoy quality time with your friends and family. According to Accuweather.com, temperatures in Austin are predicted to reach 100° this Memorial Day Weekend! To cool off, we have five ideas for epic water adventures to enjoy in Austin this year.
  1. Jet Powered Standup Paddle Boarding and Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake with Rowing Dock!

Rowing Dock, a local Austin company, offers equipment rentals such as kayaks, canoes and standup paddle boards (SUP) for Austinites to get out and on the lake.

A rental currently exclusive to Rowing Dock on Lady Bird lake is the SUPJet. Built like a standard standup paddleboard but with an added kick, pressing a button on the board activates an electric engine to bring you up to 5 mph across the water!

Tip: If you decide to rent a fishing kayak, make sure you bring your own pole and bait!

  1. Krause Springs Swimming Site

Krause Springs is one of the best spots to go swimming near Austin as the natural springs keep the pools full year-round regardless of drought.  You never have to worry about water levels like many other Austin swimming holes. The property is a sight to be seen with 32 springs, camping grounds, and even a butterfly garden.

Tip: Credit cards are not accepted, so make sure to bring cash to pay the admission fee ($8 per adult and $5 per child).

  1. Guadalupe River Tubing

Few water activities are more enjoyable than floating down a river. Whitewater Sports offers float trips and rentals along the Guadalupe River. With two custom tubing options currently available, the Horseshoe and the Fourth Crossing, there is certainly fun to be had!

With a free shuttle included, you can tube as many times as you like.

Pricing is $24 per person, which includes a high-quality tube, free shuttle, free parking and free life jacket.

Tip:  Review the pricing page before you go for potential discounts!

  1. Sculpture Falls Day Hike

Sculpture Falls is the perfect day adventure as there is a 1.5-mile hike to get to the beautiful creek and endless fun once you arrive. With gentle falls and wading pools, it is a great place to spend a few hours basking in the sun and splashing in the water with friends and family.

Tip: Bring your dog and a 6 pack! Sculpture Falls is pup friendly and drinking is permitted on the property.

  1. Snorkel on the San Marcos River

Want to spend time looking beneath the surface? Snorkel TX offers guided snorkel tours of the San Marcos River, home to all sorts of beautiful fish! The guides can even make a video of your underwater adventure as a keepsake.

Tip: Enter your email on their site for a discount!

We all know there are hundreds of great reasons to live in Austin, Texas.   And that’s exactly why we like to live in and around our apartment community at Juniper Springs.

And now that school’s out and the kids are home – all summer long – we’ve dedicated this blog to help you and your family have a super summer you will never forget,

Let the list begin!

ANIMAL ATTRACTIONS
10808 Rawhide Trail
512-288-1490
AustinZoo.com

From toddlers to teen, our own Austin Zoo has a wide variety of education programs on tap.  We’ll recommend some of our favorites:

Mommy and Me (age 2 – 5)
Zoo Kids (age 5 – 7)
Explorers (ages 8 – 10)

All of which offer programs to get kids up close and personal to the residents of the zoo and all programs we feel are a great value at only $5 for a parent/child and $3 for each additional child.

LITTLE SPOON
512 799 8301
TxKidsKitchen.com

This mobile culinary school offers summer camps in and around Austin for children ages 3 to 14.  Within this fun and interactive program, your kids will learn the basics of how to get around the kitchen, cook up some easy and delicious meals, and be professionally guided through the entire process by local chefs and nutritionists.

We also like the idea that Little Spoon hosts one-on-one sessions and also offers options for birthday parties.  Prices vary yet all seem to be a good investment – for those who want a “chef’s night off”!

FOREVER YOUNG
1101 Red River Street
512-476-6064
AustinSymphony.com
One of our favorite ways to spend the days during the summer months is at Symphony Square where the Austin Symphony hosts a summer-long line up of performances geared to keep kids entertained in the wonderful world of music.   This year’s acts include Sara Hickman (June 8), The Hey Lollies (June 22), the Instrument Petting Zoo and new to the lineup this year is Tune Buggz – a live dance and music act for the very young up to 5 years old.  Perhaps the best investment in Austin – the programs are only 50 cents per child and adults are free.

CRADLE POSE
8213 Brodie Lane, Suite 112
512-522-3886
Yogapeutics.com

Yoga for kids? You bet, yet it’s not what you think.  Cradle Pose offers one of the more innovative ways to keep your kids fit and focused on their well-being. Thanks to South Austin’s Yogapeutics, your children can immerse themselves in aerial yoga led by occupational therapist and registered yoga teacher Lindsey Lineck.   Classes are offered for children ages 4 – 16 years old. All of whom we promise will love the time hanging from a fabric sling fee off the floor while learning body awareness and mindfulness.

So there’s our short list of a long list of things to do and see with your kids this summer.  We’ll be back with more ideas later in the year yet in the meantime, get outside and get your summer on now!

Although winter is still in full swing, it’s time to make plans for that Spring Break to be sure your kids have the best one yet!

We’ve searched around the neighborhood and just outside of your apartment at Juniper Springs in Austin, Texas, to find some fun ideas to keep your kids happy and having fun throughout their entire Spring Break!

Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary

Located in Austin's Hill Country, 15 miles east of the city center, the Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary plays host to more than 300 different animals, including Galapagos tortoises, African lions and North American black bears. The zoo allows guests to feed animals such as sheep, goats and llamas. The mission of Austin Zoo is to assist animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation and education and where visitors where residents like you can come to learn about animals close-up, spend some time outdoors, get exercise and have fun, too!

Austin Children's Museum

Situated in the heart of downtown, the Austin Children's Museum features such exhibits as engineering workshops, construction zones, pet clinics, train depots and grocery stores. The museum also provides story-time sessions, as well as camps during spring break and summer vacation.

The Thinkery

And off-spring from the popular Austin Children’s Museum, The Thinkery offers exhibits that revolve around educational experiences curated by staff, so each trip with your family will be different from the last. Each gallery supports hands-on learning, with activities and content appropriate for visitors with children of all ages.

Zilker Metropolitan Park

Spread across 350 acres of land, Zilker Metropolitan Park lies along the south shore of Lady Bird Lake. The park plays host to such attractions as a botanical garden, a hillside theater, a miniature train ride and Barton Springs, a three acre man-made swimming hole.

Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum sits directly across the street from the UT campus. The three-story museum details the storied history of Texas via a special effects theater, an IMAX theater and interactive exhibits, exploring such aspects as the lives of Native Americans and battles fought throughout the state.

Scottish Rite Children's Theatre

Just one block south of the Bob Bullock Museum, the Scottish Rite Children's Theatre offers staged work geared to young children. Past performances include shows like Rapunzel and The Biscuit Brothers, a musical comedy. The theater also provides summer drama camps, highlighting lessons in everything from Shakespeare to directing.

Kiddie Acres

This children's amusement park offers a variety of carnival rides, including trains, boats, a carousel and Ferris wheel. The park also features miniature golf and more.

And right at home at Juniper Springs!
If you choose to stay close to home in your apartment in Austin, here are some other ideas to keep your kids and your neighbors using their brains and brawn right inside and outdoors this spring!

  1. Have a scavenger hunt.
  2. Bake cupcakes.
  3. Host a Pizza Party (and give awards for Best Color, Best Use of Vege’s, etc!)
  4. Build a fort.
  5. Have a movie night.
  6. Go on a nature walk in your backyard.
  7. Night time ring-toss using glow sticks.
