Enjoy the Last Splashes of Summer: Top Austin Family Adventures Before the Bell Rings

  |     |   Family, Outdoors, Summer

August in Austin, Texas, is full of sunshine, flavor and fun for the whole family—especially kids. In addition to the concerts, outdoor adventures, and cultural events, there are some great family-friendly activities to keep little ones (and parents) smiling through the summer heat before it’s time to go back to school.

We asked our families at Juniper Springs apartments to lease or rent in Austin for their personal advice; and here’s what they said:

  1. Get wild at Austin Zoo

This rescue-focused zoo is perfect for shorter attention spans: shady paths, close-up looks at big cats, primates, and a miniature train ride. Bring a small bag of quarters for feed stations and plan a “who spots it first?” animal bingo to keep kids engaged.

  1. Hands-on play at Thinkery
Austin’s children’s museum turns curiosity into hidden education moments with water labs, light-and-sound tinkering, and maker spaces. Rotate through exhibits, then reset with a snack outside. Timed tickets help avoid crowds, and the gift shop stocks great STEM kits for at-home follow-ups.
  2. Cool off at Barton Springs Pool
Here’s the perfect spot for an ‘End of the Summer” get-together with kids and friends in tow. The spring-fed water hovers around 68–70°F which is an instant summer reset. To throw in a little education, stop by “Splash!” education center to learn how the aquifer works.
  3. Explore Zilker Park and Zilker Playground

Whenever we seem to be blogging about how to keep kids having fun and being educated along the way, Zilker Park always pops up. For all the right reasons. Did you know there are over 20 different things to explore within this expansive park in Austin? For a full list, visit their impressive website and make the final days of summer seem endless all in one day!

  1. Paddle Lady Bird Lake
Got teens to entertain? We always recommend time on the many lakes that keep Austin (somewhat) cool in the summertime. At Lady Bird Lake, we like to rent kayaks, canoes, or SUPs. Go in the morning for glassy water and fewer boaters. Life jackets are provided; please use them to keep everyone safe.
  2. Discover the Bullock Texas State History Museum
Here’s one that does not always pop up on everyone’s list of things to do in Austin – yet should. At Bullock Texas State History Museum there are hands-on galleries, an IMAX, and rotating exhibits that make Texas history feel alive. Reward your kids and donate to this non-profit by visiting the museum where you will find an impressive collection of Texas-themed books and puzzles.
  3. Make a splash at McKinney Falls State Park
If you have yet to hike to the falls, now is the time to cool off and click into some ‘end of the summer’ IG posts with you and yours in front of the waterfalls.  If this is a bit too adventurous, don’t ever forget that right here at Juniper Springs apartments in Austin, the swimming pool is a super watering hole to celebrate the end of summer.

Between its water parks, educational experiences, and outdoor beauty, Austin’s end-of-the-summer adventures are made for kids to cool off, explore, laugh, and learn.
