Austin, Texas has emerged as one of the most dynamic craft distilling regions in the United States, with a mix of urban distilleries and nearby Hill Country producers contributing to a rapidly growing spirits culture.

The city’s distilleries are known for innovation, local sourcing, and a strong emphasis on visitor experiences like tastings, tours, and live music. According to tourism sources, Austin and its surrounding areas now host a wide range of distilleries producing whiskey, vodka, gin, sotol, and other specialty spirits – all within a close or reasonable drive from our apartments to rent or lease in Austin, Texas!

For those who appreciate the craft, we have mapped out an idyllic “Tour De Pour” of the top distilleries in Austin, Texas!  Cheers!

At the center of Austin’s distilling scene is Still Austin Whiskey Co., referred to as a “grain-to-glass” producer that sources Texas-grown ingredients and distills, ages, and bottles its whiskey entirely in-house. We recently explored the facility and enjoyed cocktails complete with live music, making it one of our favorite new distillery destinations.

Another major player is Deep Eddy Vodka, known for its widely distributed flavored vodkas. According to the staff on site, its tasting room helped popularize distillery tourism in the region, offering cocktails and tours that showcase its production style.

In the nearby Hill Country, Treaty Oak Distilling operates a large ranch-style distillery producing whiskey and gin, complete with a restaurant and expansive outdoor space. This destination-style model reflects a broader trend in the Austin area, where distilleries double as social and culinary hubs.  If you’re planning a special occasion, check this one out.

One of the most unique producers in the region is Desert Door Sotol Distillery, which specializes in sotol, a desert plant-based spirit native to Texas and northern Mexico. Its tasting room emphasizes regional identity and offers a distinctly Texan alternative to traditional agave spirits. The team was very informative, and we actually learned a lot while sipping on some samples.

Austin is also home to a number of smaller, innovative distilleries. Revolution Spirits produces gin, amaro, and liqueurs with a focus on botanicals and creative flavor profiles. Meanwhile, Crowded Barrel Whiskey Co. has gained attention for its experimental approach to whiskey-making and its connection to the Wizard Academy campus.

Other notable producers that we have investigated include Dripping Springs Distilling, known for vodka and gin crafted with mineral-rich Hill Country water, and one of our favorites, Fierce Whiskers Distillery, a newer entrant focused on bourbon and American whiskey.

Smaller operations like Goodnight Loving Vodka, Planet Rock Vodka Distillery and South Congress Distillery further diversify the local spirits landscape.

It’s also worth noting that some Austin-based brands, such as Tito’s Handmade Vodka, are globally recognized but do not operate traditional public tasting rooms, reflecting the range of business models within the industry.

Overall, Austin’s distillery scene blends creativity, hospitality, and regional identity. Whether in urban tasting rooms or scenic Hill Country ranches, these distilleries emphasize craftsmanship and experience, making the area a leading destination for craft spirits enthusiasts.

Cheers!

Right here at Juniper Springs apartments for rent or lease in Austin, Texas, we look forward to BBQing by the pool, picnics at our beautiful parks, and heading out to experience some of our favorite spring events in Austin.  Earlier this month, we posted a blog about some of the top events for families to enjoy in Austin.  This time, we’re offering more ideas about the things to do outdoors in Austin with springtime in full swing!

To ensure you enjoy spring in Austin, we put together some ideas we think you will enjoy with your friends and family in tow. Need more ideas? Never hesitate to stop by our office for some local advice and insight!

April is peak wildflower season in Central Texas and there are plenty of places to pack a picnic and pause to take a picture or two.

First, hit one of our many Farmer’s Markets that always promise fresh produce, local honey, and specialty breads and baked goods. Then, head to Lady Bird Lake or Zilker Park – the latter of which is ideal for the kiddos with a ride on the Zilker Zephyr Miniature Train.

The weather is also ideal for kayaking or paddle boarding or taking your first dip in one of our many lakes and streams that work their way through Austin’s parks and countrysides.  Speaking of which, for a bit of elevation, take a short hike up Mount Bonnell. It’s one of the highest points in Austin with sweeping views of the Colorado River.  We save this hike for after work to take in the sunsets!

If you have company coming in for Spring Break or just to visit, April is packed with events. Refer back to our earlier blog this month for a full list – then be sure note to miss our favorites: The iconic ABC Kite Fest fills the sky with colorful kites and family-friendly fun. Meanwhile, the Old Settler’s Music Festival brings together bluegrass, folk, and Americana fans for a multi-day celebration.

Beyond festivals, live music spills out from patios, breweries, and iconic venues all over town. Whether it’s an afternoon acoustic set or a lively evening show, there’s always something to enjoy while dining al’ fresco in Austin! Grab tacos from a local food truck, enjoy slow-smoked barbecue, or sip craft cocktails on a rooftop overlooking downtown. We always recommend a stroll down South Congress Avenue that offers a mix of shopping, street eats, and quirky local charm.

From wildflower walks and waterfront adventures to live music and incredible food, April in Austin delivers something for everyone. It’s where you can spend the morning outdoors, the afternoon exploring, and the evening listening to live music under the stars—and that’s what makes living at Juniper Springs community apartments for rent such a perfect place to call “home sweet home!”

As summer comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to create memorable adventures this fall in and around Austin, Texas! Check out these fun activities below and watch for our next Blog later this month with more ideas on what to do in Austin in the fall.

Savor the Seasonal Fruits & Veggies

After you have selected some of the season’s finest fruits, it’s time to savor and save the flavors for those holiday feasts to come. From plums to peaches to all the prunes in season, preserving those seasonal favorites is a classic way to spend a fall day. It’s also a great way to get kids excited about math, as measuring the goods comes with tasty rewards!

To get you started, we found a super simple website that lays out the basics of canning from the folks at SeriousEats.com.

Some of the best recipes can be found at BallMasonJars.com. Some of our favorites that are a little out of the ordinary, yet ideal for fall feasts include:

Habanero Apricot Jam
Carrot Cake Jam
Spiced Tomato Jam

And this ‘must-make’ seasonal favorite: Apple Butter

Attend the Pecan Street Festival

On September 14th and 15th, this Festival is one of the largest, and longest-running, arts/crafts and music festivals in the nation, presented by The Pecan Street Association, a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization. If you have never attended this ultra-popular event, this year is the year to do so. With over 50 bands, arts and crafts, kids’ games and oh-so-much more, you may want to go both days. And it’s a huge fundraiser that supports a variety of projects on 6th Street and the downtown area. Among those who benefit are artists, youth programs and homeless initiatives.

Sip on the Season’s Best Brews

While the adults enjoy a seasonal brew, there are usually family-friendly spaces where kids can join in on the fun. Enjoy the outdoor areas at local breweries where everyone can relax together.

Ziler Brewing Company and Tap Room
1701 East 6th Street

Austin Beer Works
3001 Industrial Terrace

Central District Brewing
417 Red River Street

Meanwhile Brewing
3901 Promontory Point Drive

More details re: The Baby in the King Cake
So we thought we’d stop right here to explain this tradition and dove into Better Homes & Gardens to get the story about this tradition.
Here’s a short version:
Mardi Gras (a.k.a., Fat Tuesday) falls each year on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday at the start of Lent. Traditionally, as part of that celebratory carnival, colorful king cakes are served at parties and gatherings. King cakes, either purchased or homemade, also tend to contain one customary ingredient—a tiny plastic king cake baby.
The tradition dates back hundreds of years—and there’s an interesting story behind how the king cake baby made its way into the pastry. The practice of making and serving king cakes actually dates back to the origins of Mardi Gras itself, which was first celebrated in America in 1699. Baking a baby into the cake wasn’t common practice until the 1800s.
So, before you put on your beads or fire up that delicious batch of gumbo, arm yourself with the details about why there may be a small baby in your slice of cake—and what it means if you’re the one who finds it. Hint: It’s good luck!”

King Cake – Of Course!

Ingredients:
•    2 packages (1/4 ounce each) of active dry yeast
•    1/2 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
•    3/4 cup sugar, divided
•    1/2 cup butter, softened
•    1/2 cup warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
•    2 large egg yolks, room temperature
•    1-1/4 teaspoons salt
•    1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
•    1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
•    3-1/4 to 3-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
•    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
•    1 large egg, beaten

Glaze

•    1-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
•    2 teaspoons lemon juice
•    2 to 3 tablespoons water
•    Green, purple and yellow sugars

Directions:

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add 1/2 cup sugar, butter, milk, egg yolks, salt, lemon zest, nutmeg and 2 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky).

Turn out onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 16×10-in rectangle. Combine cinnamon and remaining sugar; sprinkle over dough to within 1/2 in. of edges. Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side; pinch seam to seal. Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet; pinch ends together to form a ring. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour. Brush with egg.

Bake at 375° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack. For the glaze, combine the confectioners' sugar, lemon juice and enough water to achieve the desired consistency. Spread over cake. Sprinkle with colored sugars.

PS. If you want to hide a token plastic little baby inside, do so by cutting a small slit in the bottom of the baked cake – and be sure to tell your guests.  Have a small prize ready for the winner!
